Walt Whitman

“In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass,

I find letters from God dropt in the street, and every one is sign’d by God’s name.”

There are several aspects to Walt and his work that can be interpreted as nature poet, lover, free spirit and proponent of the spiritual values of self-realization through the recognition of life's real priorities, moderation, balance and tolerance. In “Song of Myself”, Walt is speaking for the human race and universal harmony through his own experiences. The recurrent theme of self-realization was central to Whitman’s sense of purpose. One can infer from this quote his spiritual perception of life’s real priorities: nature and human relationships, as opposed to man-made obsessions.

This quote, from “Song of Myself”,“In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass, I find letters from God drop

All in all, “In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass, I find letters from God dropt in the street, and every one is sign’d by God’s name,” suggests that if one looks deep enough into someone, one will see the beauty or the holiness in them. In each person and in everything, God dwells there, even in nature if you look profoundly enough to admire its true beauty, one will see God. For example, in the poem, he describes grass as a symbol of life-"the babe of vegetation," "the handkerchief of the Lord, A scented gift and remembrancer designedly dropt." One must properly look at people and nature, to witness the grace of God.

t in the street, and every one is sign’d by God’s name.” can be interpreted to say that we all possess something of the divine within ourselves. The holiest and most whole thing we can do for ourselves and our fellow man is develop to our fullest b
