I Dream A World

Racism affects millions of people across the world and spreads each day. It acts much like a virus, jumping from one victim to another. Even in today’s society, racism can be seen on a global scale, one such example is the genocide, which occurred in Kosovo a few years ago. Many years ago, a man saw a possible future where racism had been destroyed, where everyone had the ability to truly be free. Langston Hughes was this man. Decades ago Langston wrote, “ I Dream a World”. This poem ignited the very bonds of racism, allowing people to see a possible future, one of true freedom. Racism and prejudice across the world causes hate, pain, and even death. Also, these emotions and actions are the true root of evil across the world, something we as humans could do without. Although we as Canadians live in a society of acceptance, we still see racism and prejudice, and even take part in it. Racism and prejudice are part of our world; it is up to us to eliminate it.

The dream of a world without racism and prejudice may not be in actually today, but we have the opportunity make a difference. In Cambridge, dozens of different cultures and people thrive. The ability for one person to rid the world of racism may be impossible, but the ability to decrease racism is possible. A simple stereotype against someone can have tremendous repercussions, and to stop this personally, you help stop racism. If a single person such as Hitler can cause horrific racist thoughts in millions, maybe one person can cause millions to stop racist thoughts. Although my world may not be perfect, the world Langston envisioned is, and perfection is always something to strive for.
