When Shakespeare originally wrote Hamlet he probably would never have guessed that his story that was going to be a movie with Mel Gibson playing the lead role. He never would have imagined that his story would be viewed in a little box by millions of people. He would also never have never thought that classes would have to read his story other wise he might not have written it.
In the Zeffirelli interpretation of Hamlet, there are some many similarities to the book and a few differences. In the movie Zeffirelli decided that since he felt that in the book there was a stronger relationship between Gertrude and Hamlet then Shakespeare had let up, he adds in a scene where Hamlet shares an intimate kiss with his mother. In fact I think that the whole character of Gertrude is different in the movie then it was in the book. I believe that Gertrude in the movie is a lot more compas
So now you know that the movie version of a story doesn’t have to be bad or worse. It can be just as good or better as well. In this case I don’t want to say which was better but I know which one I was done with faster, so u think about it.
This didn’t change my perception of the book in any way. I still feel exactly the same now that I have seen the movie. I still think that Hamlet is a mess of a human being and I still think that Shakespeare was a sick human being. There was nothing so different in the movie that would make me feel like I was missing something before I had seen it.
Also I guess Zeffirelli decided that the whole issue of Fortinbras was an aspect of the book that was unnecessary. So he opted to edit him and his story out of the book, cutting all his scenes entirely. I guess that this was the directors way of cutting down on movie time.
