one billion

One billion is, for lack of a better word, A LOT . Most people use this number without realizing how big it really is. In this essay, I intend to give you a perspective on just how large a number one billion is. One billion seconds, one billion names written on a banner, one billion hairs.....each of these things may be small, but when there are one billion of them, it’s a whole different ball game.

One billion seconds past October 16, 2002 1:00:00 p.m. would be June 24, 2033 2:46:40 p.m. To find this out, the following math must be done. 1,000,000,000 (seconds) divided by 60 (seconds per minute) equals 16666666.67 (minutes in one billion seconds). This number divided by 60 (minutes per hour) equals 277777.7778 (hours in one billion seconds). This number divided by 24 (hours per day) equals 11574.07407 (days in one billion seconds). This number divided by 365 (days per year) equals 31.70979197 (years in one billion seconds). Now .70979197 must be broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. .70979197 (years) multiplied by 365 (days per year) equals 259.0740691 (days in .70909197 years). .0740691 (days) multiplied by 24 (hou

Assuming that the average person has one hair per square millimeter on their head, and their head is pretty much a sphere, half of which is covered with hair, a person with one billion hairs would have a head that is nearly 800 meters in diameter. To figure this out, the following math should be done. 1,000,000,000 square millimeters would first be converted to meters squared by dividing 1,000,000,000 (millimeters squared) by 1000 (millimeters per meter). This equals 1,000,000 (square meters in 1,000,000,000 square millimeters). The formula for the area of a sphere is 4ðr squared = area. Since we want to find out the size sphere that 1,000,000 square meters is half of, we will use 2,000,000 for the area of the whole sphere in order to keep the formula simple. 4 multiplied by ð equals 12.56, so we have 12.56 ð r squared = 2,000,000. Both sides are divided by r squared, so now we have 12.56 = 2,000,000/r squared. 2,000,000 is divided dy 12.56, and this gives us 159235.6688 = r squared. The square roots of both sides of the equation are taken and we know that r = 399.0434422. The radius is multiplied by 2, and this gives us 798.08688
