The Country Wife - Themes

In what ways does Wycherly establish the themes of the play in the opening scene of ‘The Country Wife’

In William Wycherly’s ‘The Country’ he uses many techniques to establish the main themes of the play through characterisation, theme and setting we can clearly see that these themes are evident. ‘The Country Wife’ has many main themes, one is societies immorality, the relevance it has to today, the cruelty of people, and the attitude women have towards men and marriage.

The scene opens up with Horner and the Quack talking, the first theme of the play is shown by Horner straight away. In the conversation Horner appears quite dismissive of Quack.

‘A quack is as fit for a pimp as a midwife for a bawd’

Which implies that doctors have very few morals, even though they are regarded as the higher class of society, and are supposed to be trustworthy. Even in the first page Wycherley gives us hints as to the main theme, the first to be mentioned would probably be the most important, and that is the Immorality of society. Further on in the play there is a conversation between Horner and Lady Fidget in front of Sir Jasper about their now non-existent love life, Sir Jasper is completely oblivious to what is going
