When watching the movie Pleasantville there are many interesting aspects one can analyze. The pattern of the hero initiation is prevalent in this film. Pleasantville contains the elements seen in the hero’s initiation. The pattern of the hero is divided into ten segments. The first four, call to adventure, refusal, supernatural aid, and crossing of the first threshold, are all part of the separation. The next three parts, road of trials, meeting of the good mom/bad mom, and atonement with father are part of the initiation. The remaining sections constitute the return. They are the return itself and apotheosis. These patterns are seen through out this film, but some are not in the same order as the one listed above. These elements help to identify significant moments that the hero, Bud or David, is experiencing.

The first element in hero patterns is the call to adventure. This happens to both David, the hero in the movie, and his sister Jennifer. Their call to adventure occurs after they fight over the remote control, breaking it. The television repairman unexplainably shows up right after they break it, offering them a new remote control. After quizzing David on his Pleasantville knowledge he gives him the magical

remote control that transports them into the television show Pleasantville. The next step in the pattern of the hero is refusal.

David’s refusal, Bud in the film, occurs when he is at basketball practice and Skip comes over to talk to him about Mary Sue, his sister Jennifer. Skip is planning to ask her out on a date tonight and wants Bud’s advice. Bud tells Skip that Mary Sue has been acting different lately, and that maybe going out with he is not such a good idea. Skip gets angry when he says that and misses his shot. Bud tells Skip this because he does not want Mary Sue to interfere with the normal things that occur in Pleasantville. He is afraid that she will try to seduce him and introduce sex into Pleasantville, where there never was any sex before. After Skip misses his shot, Bud realizes that he is interfering in the people of Pleasantville’s lives and his sister’s refusal to play along will damage the Pleasantville persona as much as if Mary Sue introduced sex to the town. The next step in the pattern of the hero is supernatural aid.

There are many different places in this movie where one could say that Bud has his first test. One of these places is when he talks to Mary Sue about going out with Skip. He convinces her to go, but still wants the essence of Pleasantville to remain the
