David’s refusal, Bud in the film, occurs when he is at basketball practice and Skip comes over to talk to him about Mary Sue, his sister Jennifer. Skip is planning to ask her out on a date tonight and wants Bud’s advice. Bud tells Skip that Mary Sue has been acting different lately, and that maybe going out with he is not such a good idea. Skip gets angry when he says that and misses his shot. Bud tells Skip this because he does not want Mary Sue to interfere with the normal things that occur in Pleasantville. He is afraid that she will try to seduce him and introduce sex into Pleasantville, where there never was any sex before. After Skip misses his shot, Bud realizes that he is interfering in the people of Pleasantville’s lives and his sister’s refusal to play along will damage the Pleasantville persona as much as if Mary Sue introduced sex to the town.
