time travel

Have you ever wondered what if you could travel back through time and become a millionaire by betting on horses, sports and other competitions? Or always wish you could go back through time to change some terrible incident in your past? What would happen if you could go back through time and changed the past? What would your future be like when you returned? Could you even travel into the past or future? These questions have came up time after time from movie producers to scientist. There are many theory in the world that deal with this issue, but perhaps the most the most prominent theory is Einstein’. “According to Einstein’s theory, approaching the speed of light would theoretically slow time, traveling at the speed of light would make it stand still and traveling faster than the speed of light would reverse time” (Onion, 3). The effect is the same when the mass around one is increased. Thus, mass and speed are relative in that the greater the amount of either the more time will warp. To understand more clearly how Einstein’s works let’s look at a few examples. First, if one increases the speed at which he or she is traveling than the result would be time moving faster from his or her perspective. “In 197

“When science fiction books describe time travel into the past, the reference is almost always made to the very past of the universe from which the spaceship departed” (Michigan par.10). However, as Macvey points out, “traveling into the past is only possible if we understand the past as being a different part of the universe from the one where the travel began. Such a journey would not, therefore, involve a violation of causality” (Michigan par. 10) “Also, causality, as some physicists object, is merely a construction of our limited human perspective. Incapable to fully understand the parameters of the new travel situation, we persist in superimposing on time travel the conditions of a journey from A to B through conventional space-time. In this respect, Macvey remarks”:

Traveling into the future is easy. Greatly increase you mass or speed and time slows for you sending you into the future a number of years, depending on the speed or mass created. Traveling back through time is the hard part. In order to do this one must travel faster than light speed at the same time and skip the exact speed of light. According to Eisteins theory of Relativity if someone were to go the exact speed of light then they would travel and infinite amount of years into the past. Black holes have been said to be the key to traveling into the past. A black hole is a star that is sufficiently massive and compact creating a strong gravitational field that even light could not escape. (Hawking pg. 86) As the star contracts the gravitational force gets stronger and light cones bend inward more. “Eventually, when the star has shrunk to a certain critical radius, the gravitational field at the surface becomes so strong that the light cones are bent inward so much that light can no longer escape.” (Hawking pg. 94) Black holes gravitational force is said to be great that it even pulls time inward, slowing time on the other side. There is a problem when traveling into a black hole. “Simple calculations suggest that whatever may be going on in the universe outside, the attempted passage of a spaceship through the hole ought to make the star gate slam shut.” (Gribbin pg. 15)
