Hamlet - identity crisis

Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a play which is centred around the protagonist,

The Prince of Denmark, Hamlet as he comes to terms with the demand for revenge

ordered by his late father. The central theme of the play is that of conflict, both

internal and external. Internal in the way Hamlet suffers an identity crisis and

external in the way outside influences create such a disturbance in Hamlet’s mind.

Throughout the play, Hamlet suffers from an “identity crisis” because he is torn

between three philosophical worlds: Heroic, Christian and Political. He is indecisive

of where his priorities lie. Hamlet primarily identifies with the Christian World. His

father old Hamlet, belonged to the heroic world and Claudius belongs to the political

world. When the ghost demands that Hamlet must avenge his father’s death, and kill

the King, his struggle to fulfil the ghost’s wish and meet the needs of his own world

commences. Killing the King would involve him entering the heroic world thus

contradict his beliefs as a member of the Christian world. Consequently Hamlet tries

to kill the king using the methods of the political world. This sets the scene for the
