A Comparison of The Yellow Wallpaper and Charlotte Temple

Female Repression in the 1800’s and Today: A Comparison of

The Yellow Wallpaper and Charlotte Temple

The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Gilman is a story that represents the feelings and emotions of how women were treated and thought of in the 19th century as well as the turmoils that women face today. It seems that Gilman writes The Yellow Wallpaper from her own personal experiences of facing the male dominated society. Likewise, in Charlotte Temple, by Susanna Rowson, the young woman is trapped in a relationship with a man that never seems to get better. She is controlled by the male and cannot seem to step away from him. Charlotte explains to the reader about the mistakes she has made with men and warns us to learn from her mistakes. In this paper, I will compare and discuss how similarly the women in both of these stories were treated in a male dominated society and how today we are still seeing recurrences of the same behavior.

The narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper, being female, is suffering from a depression that she is clearly aware of by the end of the story. Her husband John, a physician, listens to her testimony about her illness but shows no interest or belief. She states, “John is a physician and per

This shows the narrator seeing herself in the woman. When the narrator mimics the woman behind the paper and creeps, she locks the door behind her so her husband won’t take away the only comfort she has in the yellow room. “I see her in that long shaded lane, creeping up and down. I see her in those dark grape arbors, creeping all around the garden…I don’t blame her a bit. It must be humiliating to be creeping by daylight! I always lock the

Charlotte Temple and The Yellow Wallpaper are two stories with two very important morals they give to the readers. Society will always be prejudice over race, gender, and social status. But, one would have learned from reading these two similar stories that there will always be ways to overcome prejudice circumstances such as male dominance. Both stories were very realistic and showed many characteristics of the world today. It gave differences, but also compared moralistic traits between the 19th and the 21st centuries.

allows his even less scrupulous "brother officer" in the British army, Becloud, to position himself beside her in time for her beloved Montraville to discover them together. This story provides an example of virtue fallen through seduction and sexuality. All of her downfalls in life were because of her lover, Montraville. She seems to leave the reader with a certain tone, “Look what I’ve done- please learn from my mistakes and don’t repeat my foolish actions.” Even though Charlotte comes off as a pure and innocent girl, she possesses traits just like any other woman- lust and therefore, stupidity.
