American Arrogance

Did the United States bring the attacks on the World Trade Center on itself? Many would say “yes.” Millions of people around the world were screaming “America has been hit!” This was not a shout of sorrow or pity, rather a shout of joy and triumph. America has a reputation of arrogance, ignorance and domination. This is what led to the attacks on September 11th.

“The world doesn’t want to be American.” Though many aspects of American culture are looked upon with respect, others such as the strong desire for global capitalism, supported by military force and the neglect and destructiveness of the environment are looked down on with disgust. The self-righteous belief that America’s way is the best way is without a doubt an attitude that other countries on the receiving end do not appreciate. The USA has imposed its power on countries all around the world, many times using military force. Understandably, a certain perception has been built up that America does whatever is necessary to have its way, even if it means using its military power to get it. Maybe then, the terrorists saw the destruction of the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon symbolic of economic power and military strength that America take

Does America use other countries to benefit itself? Yes. The United States shows an interest in Saudi Arabia for one reason. Oil. The United States uses 125 billion gallons of gas per year. Because America has become so reliant on gasoline, what would happen if their supply was suddenly cut off? What would take people to their jobs, and what would happen to our airlines and the people who’s jobs rely on their transporting service? To aid in this not happening, a protection of the Royal family by the U.S. guarantees full access to the oil there. Saudi Arabia contains 25% of the world’s oil reserve which is essential to support the American economy. Without this supply of oil America’s economy would fall. Would America show any interest in this country if we did not need its oil? Most likely, the answer is no.

The perception of many throughout the world of America is arrogance, manipulation and domination. “While America’s role is acknowledged throughout the world, her claim to hegemony, not to say domination is not similarly recognized” (Mikhail Gorbachev)

The United States is viewed by many as the “Great Satan.” What has America done to deserve this title? The Arab people do not approve of Israel because of their control in Jerusalem which is the third most sacred city to the Islamic people. The U.S. supports this same country that oppresses Arab rights and controls the shrines in their sacred city. It has continually supported Israel with $840 million annually plus $3 billion more for military assistance along with access to our advanced American weapons. Furthermore, the Persian Gulf is the homeland of the prophet Muhammad. This is a land that is considered by many to be sacred. So although America has permission
