Jack vs. Tiger

There are many words frequently used to describe athletes, but “great” is not one that is thrown around loosely. When the names Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are mentioned, words like dominant, unreal, and great are sure to come up. Along with the mention of greatness always come the discussion over who is the greatest golfer of all time, and the argument can be made for both sides of the coin. They are both regarded as great because the similarities in their careers is uncanny, but the way they went about this greatness is totally different. Although Nicklaus and Woods were both enormously successful, their upbringing was very dissimilar. Their respective childhoods yielded similar on-course results, but while Jack had a steady and methodical method of wearing down the competition, Tiger exhibits more in your face explosiveness. The competition itself was also very different for Nicklaus and Woods and has been the subject of much discussion. Off the golf course, their personal lives are also on opposite ends of the spectrum. While Jack lives a very reserved family life, Tiger is forced to tackle the media’s relentless attention without a steady companion. The differences be

Comparisons will always be made between Tiger and Jack, but only time will tell who ends up being the greatest to ever play the game of golf. Woods still has his prime years ahead of him, and will surely continue in his quest to dethrone Nicklaus. If for some reason it turns out that Tiger and Jack’s tournament records are so similar that no decision can be made; then thousands more pages will be written about differences in their careers such as competition, lifestyle, and media appeal. These variances in their lives will certainly indicate who had the better record under the circumstances.

These days it seems like kids are trained from the moment they can leave their crib to be superstar athletes as was certainly the case with Tiger Woods. Tiger had a close relationship with his parents, but his mother took on most of the nurturing roles while his dad’s job was to manufacture a finely tuned athlete. Tiger’s dad, Earl Woods, served in Vietnam, and he passed many of the lessons he learned along to Tiger. Earl showed his son that Tiger’s greatest asset would be mental toughness, and Earl didn’t break it to him gently. Earl would do anything from jingle change in his pocket when Tiger was hitting to heckling him constantly. Earl pushed Tiger to the edge, and just as he was about to fall off, Earl pulled him back only to do it over again later. So that Tiger would never be intimidated, Earl had Tiger competing against kids years older than he all throughout his childhood and teen years. These are just some of the many things that Tiger went through in order to become the best golfer in the world. On the other hand, Jack Nicklaus grew up in Ohio and didn’t take up golf until the age of 10. His early competition came in the form of local junior events, and he didn’t reach the national circuit until much later. Later in life, Jack said, “I didn’t even decide that golf was a significant part of my life until I was 19.” This is in sharp contrast to Tiger who at the age of 19 was already being courted by various agents and sponsors. As is the case wit
