Exposition – The story opens in the Italian countryside, rich with crops. But the larger setting is World War I, and Italian troops are marching slowly through the area, toward the front lines of battle, dragging their artillery. They are fighting the Germans and Austrians. It is late summer and early autumn, and it is raining. The trees by the roadside are covered in dust, and have dropped many leaves. The oak forest on the hillside is gone, destroyed by the fighting. In the village many houses have walls knocked down by shelling, with plaster and rubble thrown everywhere.There are four main characters. Fredric Henry is an American second lieutenant in the Italian army serving as an ambulance driver. He is young and has dark hair. Fredric is friendly and well disciplined, but is suffering from a growing disillusionment with the war. Catherine Barkley is an English nurse serving at the Italian front. She is young, beautiful, and has blonde hair. Catherine had a fiancé for eight years, but the fiancé was killed in the war prior to the start of the story. The priest is the chaplain in Henry’s outfit. He is a young man, and a friend of Henry’s. The priest is a respectable character,
When Henry recovers from his wound, he is sent back to the front. He is losing faith in the reasons for the war, and does not want to be involved in it anymore. Rinaldi is depressed, and tells Henry how he copes: “I don’t think; I operate.” The priest is also getting tired of the war, and hopes it will end now that the officers are sick of it. maintaining faith in God while being cynical about the war. Rinaldi is a surgeon at the Italian front, and a friend of Fredric Henry, but a little older. Rinaldi is frustrated with his role of fixing up the wounded, only to see them sent back to the front lines. He seeks mental escape through immediate pleasures and sensual relationships. Climax - Henry joins the mob of people fleeing the advancing Germans and Austrians. He is arrested by the battle police, and fears he will be executed for leaving his men. Henry escapes by diving into a nearby river, and swims downstream. Later he jumps onto a train and escapes to the Italian city of Milan. Henry watches as the Italian military collapses and begins a chaotic retreat. Henry is responsible for a group of ambulance drivers, and orders them to fall back. They make some progress, but find their way is blocked by heavy traffic. The drivers with their ambulances leave the main road, but soon get stuck in the mud on a side road. Henry orders two sergeants who had been riding with them to help free the stuck vehicle. When the sergeants disobey and begin to flee, Henry shoots one of them, but the other escapes. Finally, unable to free the stuck ambulance, the drivers simply abandon their vehicles. Henry and Catherine spend the winter in Switzerland, enjoying a peaceful life. The war is a distant memory.
