frankenstein feminism

::::the theme of feminism is pervasive in the text of frankenstein.

dr frankenstein identifies nature as female "i pursued nature to her hiding place". one dimension of the cultural encoding of the female of the time was passive and pocessable, the willing holder of mans desire.by stealing the womans control over reproduction Frankenstein has eliminated the females biological function and source of cultural power. His monster is male and he refuses to create a female.in the 19th cent Genevian society men inhabited the social sphere women the domestic sphere.therefore intellectual activity is seperated from emotional activity..this leads to frankensteins downfall.he cannot love and work at the same time he fails to feel sympathy for the monster he has created and he fails to feel any responsibility for his creation.

the monster has no identity this could be perceived as the status of women in the time it was written..he stands for marjinalised people women mayb??

Frankenstein is afraid of an independant female will, that the female monster might not comply with the social contract made by another before her birth..that female desires could be sadistic..

his most passionate relationships are with men rather than women..c

:::::I am also writing about Feminism in frankenstein. I am basically researching Shelley's background and there are many striking similarities between the actions in the book and the actions in her life. True the women in the book are all passive, but in my opinion Shelley chooses to make them all passive because for one that is the way it was in her society and second she is showing the flaws of her patriarchal society. Shelley is basically showing what goes wrong in a society dominated by males and a society where females are oppressed.

With this in mind, I turn back to Frankenstein. Here, the proto-feminist question would be this: how does Shelley's writing embody the spirit of the feminist movement in her novel Frankenstein? The women were Justine Movitz, Elizabeth Lavenza, shortly Frankenstein's mother, Margaret, Safie the daughter of the turk, Agatha de Lacey, Safie's mother (mentioned in the Creature's story about the Turks). Now, assess who seems to be happy, and who seems to be frustrated or forced to be a traditional woman against her will. DING DING DING DING Well looks like my time is up, have fun! I'm going to the movies!
