Fredrick Douglass
The book that I chose is Narrative Of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave by Douglass. Frederick Douglass was born a slave on a plantation in Tuckahoe, about 12 miles from Easton, in Talbot County, Maryland. He did not know who was his real father. He heard some people said that his first master, Captain Anthony was his father. His mother was Harriet Bailey; she was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, who were both colored and dark. His real name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. Nobody knows the exact date of his birth, but historians believe it was in February 1818. The main character of this book is Frederick Douglass. He was a slave and for me he was a strong person emotionally because he didn’t allow his surrounding affect the way he thought and future plans. In the first chapters he talks about horrible scenes he sees in his childhood. He explains when he saw his aunt being whipped and how the blood ran from his back. Even though he depicts ugly reminisces like these of his childhood experiences, one can feel the painful sentiments that he must have felt while writing his autobiography. Now he was responsible for himself. He had no home, no friends and was risking getting captured again. He trusted no man because he was scared of being a slave in Maryland again. “I looked for home somewhere else. I was confident that I would not find one which I should like less than the one I was leaving.”(Douglass 24) Douglass lived on Colonel Lloyd’s plantation for a while and was not happy being there. There wasn’t much for him to do there but once in a while he was whipped. He suffered a lot because he had no clothing and was cold and hungry. He didn’t have a bed either. Captain Anthony then decided that at the age of 7 he would leave to Auld’s plantation. He was very happy to leave and look for a home somewhere else. He was also happy because the ties that ordinarily bind children to their homes were all suspended in his situation. He didn’t find it hard to leave his old farm. It wasn’t home to him. He didn’t feel whatev
