Now and in the past women in general have been criticize by society, that it’s become blind toward complimenting all they’ve overcome throughout history. The struggles woman had to go through Just for simple rights, such as to be able to vote, to work,and to Just have a say in this world. Examples of woman that had to struggle in the past for these rights were Rosa Parks, Harriet Tutmen and many more throughout history. To society a woman beauty is there physical and therefore they bypass the true beauty a woman has. There wisdom, strength, creativity and courage as shown in a story called “Mother Catherine” by Zora Neale Hurston and this essay “Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit” by Leslie Marmon Silko. These pieces of writing are all on our ordinary women but yet so distinctive to each other. Mother Catherine by Zora Neale Hurston is about a women strong religious belief, they were so strong that it was contagious. As for Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit by Leslie Marmon Silko is about the Native American life on How they thought was the correct way of living life, such as the way the world is lived today. The Native American life was the way of living the perfect life. She touches many different types of ways of discrimination such as gender, sexuality and race. But she mostly explains how it was even harder for her to be a woman with a mix culture, being half white and Native American. But being brought up the Native way she was taught how it was wrong to discriminate anyone for any reason. “To the pueblo way of thinking, the act of comparing one living being with another was silly, because each living being or thing is unique and therefore incomparably valuable because it is the only one of it kind.”( page 144.) Also what brings this story and essay together is the belief of courage and strength a woman has to over come her obstacles or even pain. Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit “Yellow women is my favorite because she dares to cross traditional boundaries of ordinary behavior during time of crisis in order to save the pueblo; her power lies in her courage and uninhibited sexuality, which the old time pueblo stories celebrate again and again because her fertility was so highly valued.” (page 148) This shows how a woman would do anything to protect what hers, for example when a single mother does everything in her power to make sure her children are loved, well and educated As for Mother Catherine “ After the call she consecrated her body by refraining from the sex relations, and by fasting and prayer. She was married at the time. Her husband prayed two weeks before he was converted to her faith. Where upon she baptized him in a tub in the backyard.
