“ To kill a mockingbird” by Harper Lee, expresses its values and attitudes mainly through the character of Atticus, and in turn, the children of Atticus learn vital life lessons. Atticus’s wife died two ears after Scout was born, and he had to raise the two children on his own, with the continued help of Calpurnia the Negro housekeeper.

Atticus as a father, if judged according to modern ideas and conventions, would be seen as an excellent father. Throughout the text, the reader follows the plot through the eyes of Scout, The reader experiences what Scout learns and how she matures throughout the text. The reader knows that Atticus is an exceptional father because most of the lessons in which scout learns, are taught by Atticuss, in a very subtle and affirmative way. He knows when his children need him; he knows when to be compassionate and when to be strict. He teaches both Jem and Scout about life, but his lessons develop from daily situations and are not imposed from the authority of adulthood.

Atticus done his job as a lawyer. He researched, interrogated and provided concrete evidence to a judge, jury and public spectators. But despite the satisfactory completion of his job, he still failed as a lawyer with respect to his case. Atticus being a very tolerant and caring man, earned the respect of the black community, but rapidly lost his social respect among the white community.

Atticus was a very good lawyer, but underestimated how stubborn the American public can be, and therefore failed in the eyes of the community. His client may have been wrongly prosecuted, but as a reader, you are positioned to see Atticus as a hero and therefore a great lawyer. He undertook a very temperamental case in which he placed himself and his family in great danger. He was a very courageous lawyer to represent a black man in such racial turmoil, and any reader would praise such a person.
