A major theme in Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the incompatibility of slavery and Christian values. Stowe demonstrates that the system of slavery and the moral code of Christianity oppose each other. She insists that no Christian should be able to tolerate slavery. Throughout the novel, the more religious a character is, the more he or she is against slavery. This is portrayed by Eva. She is the novels most morally perfect white character who does not understand why anyone would see blacks and whites differently. In contrast, the nonreligious Legree practices slavery and treats them inhumanely.
