Balancing the Michigan Budget

Since the late 1970’s the United States government has necessitated concern over spending and an ever-increasing deficit. In the case of the State of Michigan, there has been considerable concern by officials for reducing its own deficit. Aside from its deficit problem, reductions in federal funds coming into the state, resulting from the implementation of the balanced budget amendment meant a reduction in revenues. All of this was accompanied by growth in public spending.

Another aspect of the political environment in Michigan that has affected fiscal planning has been the term limits imposed on the Governor, its Senators and Representatives. Many economists fear this will lessen the chance of fiscal policies that would be affective in the long-term being implemented.
