Clive Staples Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis or better known as C.S Lewis was brought up in a normal Christian home but early events in his life effected his religious consciousness in good and bad ways like while enrolled at Cherbourg house the clergymen would beat him with a rod to convince him to believe in Christianity, consequently this made him disbelieve in it. Also “The death of both his parents and his brother may have also contributed to his disillusionment with Christianity” (qtd in Contemporary Authors 8). The people liked his style of writing and they like the message he sent with his stories but he never thought of himself as different than anyone else he just loved to write for the people and as Jonathan D. Evans pointed out in “Lewis styled himself as a common man addressing concerns faced by all” ( qtd in Clive Lewis).Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland to Florence a housewife and Augusta Hamilton Lewis a solicitor. His mother When he was 10 his mother, father and brother died in the same year. Lewis was then tutored by the former headmaster of Lurgan College W.T Kirkpatrick from 1914 to 1917 until he enrolled at Oxford University College. He stayed at Oxford for six months until the outbreak of World War 1 then he enlisted and went to Keble College for officers training. He became an officer in the 3rd battalion, Somerset light infantry, he reached the front line in France on his 19th birthday. (Chronology of. Lewis 1) A year later he was wounded at The Battle of Arras he recuperated and returned to duty six months later, only to be discharged two months later in December 1919 it was then when Lewis decided to more closely focus on his writing The Cosmic trilogy series is one of C.S Lewis's more contrivercial book series because most people believe that this series is science fiction because the first two books take place on Mars and Venus but because of all the Christian references and Christian symbolism used some consider it to be otherwise. As Tal Cohen explains " I think the best title for these books would be religious fiction" (qtd in Tal Cohen 1). These books are about a man who gets kidnapped and taken to Mars to be a human sacrifice to the natives but he escapes and is taken to Venus in which he tries to convince a women not to break the laws her god has set for her. These books are all riddled with Christian symbolism and allusions to famous biblical stories which makes the reader contemplate a lot more then any normal piece of literature.
