Irony/Reality in Smoke Signals

Analyzing the Irony and Reality of Symbolism in

The film Smoke Signals contains many forms of symbolism. Symbolism was used throughout (the majority of) the film, depicting the emotions and thoughts of each character. It clearly gives us a hint of the reality that the characters face. There were many forms of symbolism which have truth and meaning to them. These forms reveal distinct truth in its own, stating (the fact) that “this symbolized that” and there were no two ways about it. However, there were numerous types of symbolism whose significant is less evident. These forms portrayed another side to these many sorts of symbolism. Irony was not as evident in these forms as was reality, however they both represented equally, two entirely opposite views of symbolism in Smoke Signals. The film subtly incorporates the two types of symbolism without making it excessively obvious, and also shows the importance of having symbolism in the film.

Many of the symbols in Smoke Signals , in that there aren’t any insights which point to it being based on irony. For example, in Smoke Signals the fire which happened the fourth of July, symbolized the destruction of Thomas’ family, and also the destruction of A

Its shows that he is missing his father with all his heart and that he loves his father so much that he is still holding hope for him to return. Without that specific moment we wouldn’t have noticed Victor’s real longing for his father. Symbolism also creates another way of telling indirect things such as how most Native families are close and stick together. This is demonstrated by the fried bread, instead of plainly saying that they were close, the author throws in symbolism for us to decide the true meaning. The symbolism obviously intensifies and reinforces our understanding of these characters.

As subtle as it might have been, there was irony in many of the forms of symbolism. For instance, the date july 4, 1976 symbolized the anniversary of the American
