rain man
The movie I chose for this assignment was Rain Man. Released in 1988 by MGM Studios the movie revolved around two brothers, Charlie and Raymond Babbitt. Charlie was a struggling businessman who seemed to be going through financial problems. The business Charlie was running was going under real fast and he was unable to pay back loans he received from creditors. While Charlie and his girlfriend were leaving to go out of town for a weekend he received a call with news that his father (whom he had been estranged from for many years) had died. Charlie turned around and started heading to Cincinnati, Ohio to go to his fathers funeral. After the funeral Charlie and his girlfriend went to his childhood home to hear the reading of the will, naturally he expected to inherit his fathers entire $3 million estate as he did not know he had a brother. However, much to Charlies dismay, his fathers lawyer informed him because he had not attempted to contact his father all he would be inheriting was a 1949 Buick Roadster and his fathers’ prize winning rose bushes, he also told him that the rest of his fathers’ estate
Autistic disorder is a long-term disorder that emerges early in life and the individual tends to be extremely unresponsive to others, has poor communication skills, displays a highly repetitive behavior, and is rigid. In this movie Raymond was completely unresponsive to anything outside his routine, his routine included things like; bed at the same time every night, faithfully watching certain television shows, writing in his journal, keeping his books in a definite order and, he also had a strict eating routine for certain times and meals depending on the day of the week. When Raymond’s’ routine was interrupted by the things Charlie was doing it was very distressful for Raymond. The more Raymond was pressured by Charlie to do things differently the more disturbed Raymond became. These disturbances were overwhelming for both Raymond and Charlie at times Raymond would hit himself and begin to yell because things were so tense. Raymond also had no communication skills which made situations even more stressful. Perhaps Raymond could have functioned better if he had not been confined to an institution for so many years but the way he reacted in social situations made it almost impossible for him to have any type of social relationships. Autistic disorder does not seem to have a definite known cause. When autism was first identified some theorists believed as a child sociocultural causes were to blame (death, divorce, etc…). However, no research has ever been produced supporting this theory. Primary explanations of causes today are cognitive deficits and biological abnormalities. It has been proven through MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans that people who are autistic show abnormalities in the structure of the brain, with significant differences within the cerebellum. People with autism often represent a considerable challenge to those who care for them, train them, educate, and support them. Which would explain why Raymond was instit
