Arnaud du Tilh does not deserve the sympathy from both Bertrande and the reader. This is due to his deceiving during his time impostering, Martin Guere, the household authority. Arnaud’s arrogance and selfishness cause him to abuse this authority causing him to take advantage of many people. This gave Bertrande great distress, which eventually brought ruin to the estate.

Arnaud is very deceitful. His return as Martin, the household’s authority, is well rehearsed and researched. In fact he acts the role so well that “the loneliness of the house was dissipated” (p40) as people readily accepted him. Arnaud even manages make the household believe that Martin is “like his father, but become gracious” (p37). This dishonest household authority role is a main cause that Arnaud deserves no sympathy.

Bertrande, with the help of her Uncle the “one remaining defend of the old authority of her husband’s house” (p77) Bertrande brought Arnaud to become convicted of his crime. However this came at a large cost, as the Guere household was torn between her allegiance to their female and male master. Although later admitting their mistake their belief in Arnaud, the household turned from a joyful house to one “which all peace and contentment had been destroyed.” (p70) Bertrande admits her pursuit of Arnaud’s false identity brought ruin to the household when she says, “I am destroying the happiness of my family. And why? For the sake of a truth to free myself from a deceit…” (p81)
