Cameron Crowe, born on July 13, 1957, started his career much earlier than most other people in California. He did not begin his career as a director, but as a writer. Before Crowe was even old enough to drive, he landed jobs writing for such publications as Penthouse, Playboy, Creem, and the Los Angeles Times. At age 16, he joined the staff of Rolling Stone Magazine, where he was a contributing editor. Crowe also wrote liner notes for some of the world’s hottest musical acts. Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, And Led Zeppelin all had Crowe write for them. He also went on tour with Led Zeppelin to do a story for Rolling Stone, which the movie Almost Famous is based on. Crowe graduated from University of San Diego High School. At age 22 he returned to his high school to do research for a book he was writing, Fast Times at Ridgemont High , which later became his Hollywood debut film. After the release of the film it was uphill from there. He went on to screen write and direct several more blockbuster hits. Fast Times at Ridgemont High is a comedy about teenagers looking for sex, and trying to figure out what they really want out of life. Stacy Hamilton(Jennifer Jason Leigh) is on a search for sex, but after she finds it, she also finds herself pregnant. She has an abortion, but finally realizes what she really wants in life. “ I don’t want sex, any one can have sex. I want love” is the line she says at the end of the movie. Sean Penn Plays the surfer dude Jeff Spicoli in the film, he offers a humorous relief during the serious parts of the film. This film is the American Pie of the 1980’s.

Cameron Crowe is not a director but a creator. He starts with nothing but personal experience and ends up with a movie jammed packed with every concern, emotion, thought, and just about every issue that human beings deal with. The world is big and complicated, but Crowe makes it simple.

Singles is a warm comedy about a group friends(all single), Trying to find love in the harsh, Seattle dating scene. Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) meets Janet Livermore(Bridget Fonda) in a night club. They hit it off but Janet is just coming off a horrible relationship, and is weary to trust men again. This movie is mostly about these two and their relationship. However other plots surround the main one.

Cameron Crowe Feels that music is an important part of creating an atmosphere in a film. He uses just as much music as he does dialogue. Every Movie that I viewed started with music that created a specific mood. Usually the music is popular music of the time period which the movie takes place . Fast Times at Ridgemont High starts the movie with 1980’s dance music that sets a carefree atmosphere. It is the main character’s senior year, and we already, in the opening five minutes of the film see that this is going to be a fun, enjoyable comedy. The movie continues with many more hits from the 80’s. The movie Almost Famous starts off in a more mellow tone. a synthesized piano plays a repeated rhythm of a single note. Then, like Fast Times the movie continues with mellow sounds of the early 1970’s. The movies Singles and Say Anything are the same way except these have a little more hard rock, than mellow sounds.
