German Music

In a country that at one time was divided east from west, music has become a source of great national pride, and the citizens of Germany take great pleasure in remembering and celebrating their country's musical achievements. Although once considered a center of musical excellence with composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner, Germany's modern music scene has succumbed to the outside influence of America and its large music industry. For a person to fully understand the music of Germany today, he or she must first look back at its amazing history and the struggles that its music has faced over the past century.

For many hundreds of years, the only form of music found in Germany was found in churches. It was the Latin chants of the clergy, monks, and nuns (Ian Roberts, 88). In the wake of the Martin Luther and the reformation of the church in the 16th century, the new liturgy of Protestantism made way for different forms of church singing. No longer were hymns sung in Latin, but instead Germans began singing and composing in German and gave rise eventually to the German Cantatas and oratorios (Barry Turner, 39).

Over the next century the Baroque style and movement was started. One of baroque's most well

If one wants to sum up the wonderful originality, vitality, and significance of the German spirit in one incomparably eloquent image, then one should look keenly and meaningfully at the appearance of the musical marvel Sebastian Bach. (Roberts, 90).

During this time, as Germany was under the rule of Hitler and his army, many prominent musicians left for other countries. These included Jewish musicians, as well as non-Jewish artists who opposed the Nazi rule. This move of many German musicians eventually proved to be a positive addition to the future of American music (Kolinsky, 247-249). Unfortunately, this move also proved to be the beginning of the end of Germany's musical greatness and authority in the Europe and the world.

As mulit-regional and multicultural as Germany may be becoming, it is safe to say that the people of Germany have nothing to worry about when it comes to their love of music. The music of Germany has been put to the test of time and war, and yet the classics still ring out as beautifully as they first did, and although the country may be open to outside influence like that of the American music industry, it is safe to say that the historical German music industry of Beethoven, Bach, and countless others will continue on for many years. The foundation that German composers built for the rest of the world is the foundation that many musicians still use today, and that which many future musicians will build on in the future.
