Phosphorus
For our semester project, we had to do two separate, but not entirely different experiments. We had to perform two experiments because the first failed and we were pressed for time to complete the second. The first experiment was testing the effects phosphorus would have on the growth of onions. The second experiment was similar to the first in that we tested the effects of phosphorus on the growth of a plant, but this time we used radishes. The test on onions failed where as the test on radishes worked. Our first experimental procedure for the onions was: Three 5 * 24 *5 in. plastic trays with three 24 * 5 in. bottom trays. Perlite, a soil conditioner to prevent compaction in containers and improve aeration and drainage in potting mixes. Perlite has no nutritional value, Triple super phosphate potting mix (0% nitrogen, 45% Phosphorus, 0% potassium.) What we want to know is “ What effects will added phosphorus have on the growth rate of an onion? In phosphorus –depleted, desert soil, will added phosphorus make the stem of an onion plant grow to a taller hei
Next, we used an almost identical experimental procedure for the radishes. One of the main differences was that, for the lack of time, we were only able to record three weeks of data for the radishes as opposed to the onions, in which case we were able to get the full four weeks of data. Another main difference was that more radish seeds were planted. This resulted in some excess radishes being removed from the planting tray. It’s a good thing that we did have to remove some because otherwise we wouldn’t have noticed the difference in root size. The radishes with 2 tablespoon of or phosphorus had much larger roots than the radishes with only 1 tablespoon., and the roots of the radishes with 1 tablespoon were considerably larger than the radishes roots in the control group. Other than the differences in root growth, the only a few millimeters of growth differentiated the plants stems. Group C, with 2 tablespoons of Phosphorus, averaged 2-3 mm taller than the groups A and B. Groups A and B were approximately the same at the end of the third week. From these results we conclude that phosphorus helps improve r
