Schindler v Holocaust

How could someone live life knowing that they may not make it to the next day? How could they live not knowing whether the ones they loved were still alive or had been ruthlessly and brutally killed? What would it be like having everything you have ever had taken away from you and destroyed in front of your eyes? All of these things happened to millions of Jewish people in eastern Europe during the late 1930's and 40s. The Holocaust was one of the darkest moments of modern world history. Because of this, it has always been rather tabu in the entertainment business. I will however be discussing how it is portrayed in the movies, namely “Schindler’s List” and “Life is Beautiful.” First giving the historical background and then the movies likeness to it.

The Holocaust was the name given to the eradication and torture of many Jewish people during World War II. This began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany with his Nazi party. There were more than six million people who died in the twelve-year period. All of this was done to them because of one simple reason, they weren’t of the “proper” backgrounds and beliefs. Hitler believed that by terminating al

This movie, however not as well researched and perfectly drawn up as Schindler’s does manage to find a warm spot in the heart for one of the darkest points in history. It showed that there were some that could keep a good attitude, and be so selfless that they could brighten up others’ days even when they were surrounded by death and destruction.

By late1944, Germany's hold on Poland had weakened. As the Russian army approached, the Nazi's were trying desperately to complete their killing and sent all remaining Jews to die. But Schindler hung tough and never gave up his “Schindlerjuden,” the workers he referred to as “my children.”. After the liquidation of a Krakow ghetto and the transfer of many Jews to the Plaszow concentration camp, Schindler used his influence to set up a branch of the camp for 900 Jewish workers in his factory compound in Zablocie. He then made his now famous list of the workers he would need for its operation. The factory operated in its new location a year, making defective bullets for German guns. Schindler took the chance of being killed for this, selling bullets that he knew would not fire, to the very government that was in the process of the largest genocide in the history of the world. Conditions were horrid, sometimes worse for Schindler than the workers.

Although “Schindler’s List” portrays actual events of the Holocaust better than any other movie in history, there are numerous other movies that depict certain events that occurred. One such movie is “Life Is Beautiful.” This movie somehow manages to make a comedy out of the tragic events that occurred in a concentration camp. The movie takes place in Italy rather than in eastern-Europe. Italy was also involved with the Germans in the Holocaust, though the termination was not as large, it still occurred and killed thousands of Jews itself. “Life is Beautiful”shows some scenes from this different type of camp and torture. It is written, directed, and starred in by Roberto Benigni. The movie starts out as does any romantic comedy, the audience rooting for the hard-luck loser, Guido a Jewish part-time waiter, to capture the girl, Dora, from her unloving, money hungry faience. After the couple got together and married, they have a son, who they name Giosue. But then things take a turn for the worse. Italy, takes sides with Germany in the war and begins persecuting their Jewish population. On Giosue’s fourth birthday, he and his father are captured by soldiers and taken to a concentration camp. The movie then focuses on Guido making up an adventure for his son to convince him that everything is going to be ok. All the while there are death, torture, brutal labor, starvation, and dehumanizing acts occurring around them. In doing so Guido not only calms his son’s nerves, but he also succeeds in calming his own(Mirimax).
