Tlatelolco Massacre, 1968, Mexico
Many events occurred during the year of 1968 that impacted the world like the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, Women Civil Rights, etc. To name some events include the North Vietnamese launch of the Tet offensive at Nha Trang, which brought over 70,000 North Vietnamese troops to take part in battles from jungles to cities with the American troops and the South Vietnamese. Then, the very infamous picture taken of a South Vietnamese officer executing a Viet Cong prisoner. This would rally anti-war protest in the U.S. Two important figures of the 60’s were assassinated. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy were shot and killed. Women liberation groups, rallied to protest the Miss America Beauty Contest in Atlantic City, many women took their bras off and burned them as sign of protest. Then we proceed to October of 1968, which gave way to the Summer Olympics Games in Mexico City. These Olympics became controversial within it self when two African-American U.S. athletes did the black power salute during the Star-Spangled Banner at their medal ceremony. And before that there was October 2 of 1968, when police and military troops in Mexico City opened fire to thousands of students and union demonstrat
That whole day was orchestrated by the Mexican Government to end all protests against them. They planned the event weeks in advanced since all day that day the electrical power and phone lines were cut off, sniper shooters were positioned on top of roofs of buildings, and also there was the secret government group called Olympia Battalion who dressed up in civilian clothing with a distinctive white glove and began the shooting. The Mexican press never accurately reported the events of the summer and fall of 1968. Television news had reported that no more than 30 people had been killed. This event began as a student movement by university students that were tired of the repression and unjustness the government was doing to its people. This repression and unjustness had been going on for years and escalated to its peek in 1968 because of the Summer Olympics and the attraction it brought. This was the first time that a Latin American country was going to be the host of this prestigious event. The meeting was bogus and that evening a flair shot in the sky was the sign to the police and army to begin shooting at the civilian protestors. It is believed that the president and his Minister of Interior gave these orders.
