If I were to say to Hamlet “To Thine Own Self Be True” to me it would me tell what you know, say what you feel, be true to your self. So Hamlet is torn apart, not knowing what to do about the whole thing and the fact of the matter is that Hamlet’s father wants him to avenge his death and kill the new king. What is he to do? If he were told “To Thine Own Self Be True” do you think that maybe he might of told someone what was going on? I think that Hamlet was in a predicament that he had no control over, he couldn’t really tell anyone cause they already thought he was mad and had he said anything the king would have had him sent away sooner and killed. When he finally did tell his mother of what his father had told him she did think he was mad and looked at him in a disbelieving way and in a way upset that Hamlet would ever say anything like that about the man she was with now. Hamlet was in a position to where he thought that the only way out would be DEATH hence his “To Be or Not To Be” monologue.
