Nowadays many people are arguing about whether all human beings are equal. Unfortunately, many people are still suffer from discrimination in some ways based on something such as age, gender, social class, race, ancestry, national origin, religion, martial status, disability or other similar factor. Discrimination is the behavior that usually follows by prejudicial thinking. To discriminate is to treat one person or group worse than others or better than others. Even though there are laws to protect the civil rights of every mankind, a lot of people are still frequently have been victims of discrimination. Like the majority of people, the author of “Mary”, Maya Angelou, who writes about her experience as a housemaid is discriminate by an old white woman. Liliana Heker, the author of “The Stolen Party”, writes a discriminate story about Rosaura, a housemaid’s daughter, attends the master’s daughter’s birthday party. Angelou and Heker’s main character, Rosaura, have share the similarity as the victim of the discrimination; however, their experiences are different.

Both Angelou and Rosaura have been victims of discrimination. Being a black girl, Angelou have been treat with discrimination. At Angelou’s tenth year


Moreover, Angelou is discriminate because of the difference of race. Angelou is a black girl in contrast to Mrs. Cullinan, a white woman. Mrs. Cullinan feels superior that she can rename Angelou. However, Angelou feel resentment when Mrs. Cullinan calls her Mary. To retaliate, Angelou brake one of Mrs. Cullinan’s favorite Virginia china. As a result, Aneglou gains back her identity and respect. “Everything happen so fast…. but I know that Mrs. Cullinan said, “Her name’s Margaret, goddamn it, her name’s Margaret,” (MC 286). In contrast to Angelou, Rosaura is discriminate because the difference of class. Rosaura is the maid’s daughter and Luciana is the rich daughter. Despite her mother’s warning, Roasura is determined to go to the Luciana’s party. “She wanted to go to that party more than anything else in the world, “I’ll die if I don’t go” she whispered” (MC 324) As a result, Rosaura’s mother is right. “That’s one’s not your friend, You know what you are to them? The maid’s daughter, that’s what.” (MC 324). Unlike Angelou, Rosaura did not gain back her dignity or respect. Rosaura only accepts the disappoint and painful truth and keeps her sadness to herself when she sees the two bills from Senora Ines. “Rosaura felt her arms stiffen, stick close to her body…. That was all.” (MC 328)
