Critique: Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance

Mary Ray Worley’s open letter to fat people, “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat People,” argues that growing up in twentieth-century American society, many people believe that being fat is a serious personal, social, and medical liability. Few can deny what Worley, member of NAAFA (National Association to Advance For Acceptance) said, “Pressures like these must certainly contribute to the shortening of many fat people lives” (Worley 471). Obesity is a major issue in our society; many Americans would rather die or cut off a limb than be fat. Overweight people are reluctant to seek medical attention and exercise because of fear of humiliation.

In the article, Worley argues that there are a growing number of people who believe that it is possible to be happy with your body even if it happens to be fat. She also argues that fat people should not be apologizing for their sizes. While attending one of NAAFA convention in San Diego, she discovers a whole new world, a world that accepts people regardless of the shapes and sizes they are. She didn’t feel embarrassed about her body; people were just enjoying themselves in their bodies without a shred of self-cons


I agree with Worley that fat is not solely the reason for health risk, our culture also contributed to the risk. Fat people are often targeted with comments and unkind stares. On the subject of the true health risks for fat people she has the following to say:
