early childhood
Every child is different, they grow and develop at different rates. Many factors can attribute to the different developmental rates from one child to another. My research will relate to the developmental milestones of a five year old, displayed by a table format. I will observe the child during two activities (by running records), summarise and compare the researched milestones against the child actions. In the following commentary I will outline the environmental and other factors that play a major role in the developmental progress of a child in their early developmental years.During my observations it was apparent that my child was very competent in most of the developmental milestones outlined in my research. This can be attributed to her home environment. My child has a stable and loving home environment in which to learn and interact with others. She is the youngest of three children, with the older two siblings being male. Studies have shown that youngest children are more out going and self-confident. From my experience with having an older male sibling, there, always seemed to be a quarrel to contend with, an older sibling to imitate and to copy, someone to talk to and play w
By the age of nine fine and gross motor skills are in unison in relation to levels of milestone development. Boys and girls at the age of five have similar developmental achievements in this area, it is not gender biased, as is the general public’s perception. My child appeared to be very physical and full of energy and achieved most of the physical milestones (noted in my research) for her age. By the time her fifth birthday arrived my child was able to ride a bicycle competently without any assistance. I believe the physical development milestone of riding a bicycle unaided has been reached due to her environment / home life. She has been exposed to such activities, from an early age, through her family’s lifestyle and activities shared as a family. Her older male siblings often ride their bicycles with her, and do so together as a family weekend pastime. Leve (1980) summarises that “Although some children are far advanced over others, almost all children develop sufficient motor skills for such tasks as writing and recreational sports. Generally, fine motor coordination lags behind gross motor coordination.” (p.183). runner with control of her direction and speed.
