Ugarit

Ugarit, an ancient village located in the region of Canaan on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, north of Beirut, in what is now Syria, plays a tremendously important role in the in understanding of the Old Testament. The excavation of the site began in 1928 at a site known as Minet el-Beida, “The White Harbor,” by a local group known as the Alaouite tribe. The excavation was then continued by the Academie des Iscriptions et Beles-Lettres in Paris, overseen by head curator Claude Schaeffer.

Ugarit is blessed with a very long history, which started around 6000 BCE, during the Neolithic period. “Ugarit and the Bible,” Quartz Hill School of Theology, http://www.theology.edu/ugarbib.htm, November 20, 2002.

The tablets that were found in Ugarit mark the “origin of the Bible,” because of the ability to know piece together everything from the Canaanite past with that of today. The Ugarit tablets are the sole evidence of Syro-Palestinian literature before the Bible. The most significant trait about the tablets was the ability to now translate key phrases from difficult Hebrew passages that would eventually help a more thorough understanding of the Old Testament. The script found inscribed on the tablets was that of an alphabetic cuneiform, consisting of about 30 letters. This language was used to keep legal records, letters, outlines of rituals and mythological significance. The tablets of Ugarit were helpful in having a better understanding of the changes in language within the Bible. Some examples of where the Ugarit findings are used in the Bible are Proverbs 26:23 when the text is written as “Mygys Psk”
