The next section of Jasmine starts with Jasmine’s relationship with her husband, Prakash. It is a happy time for Jasmine as Prakash was the one who brought out Jasmine’s true self. Prakash, who was still a student at the time, loved his wife, Jasmine, and dreamed of opening their own repair shop. He later applied and was accepted to a school in Tampa, Florida. Although Jasmine did not want Prakash to go to America but accepted the fact that it would provide them with a better life as well as make Prakash happy. After landing, Half-face takes Jasmine in his car and drives her to a motel. Once there, he demoralizes her and eventually rapes her. Jasmine while in the bathroom of the motel room, slices her tongue in order to spill blood on Half-face. Jasmine then went up to him while he was sleeping and made a small cut in Half-face’s neck with the knife Kingsland gave her. At that, Jasmine showered and left the motel.

When Taylor finally arrives with Duff, Jasmine is torn between her decision. Jasmine says, “I am not choosing between men. I am caught between the promise of America and old-world dutifulness” (240). Jasmine decides to go with Taylor.

Jasmine also recalls living with Professorji. Because Jasmine was his favorite student and was a helpless widow she could have stayed with his family for as long as she wanted.
