It is a happy time for Jasmine as Prakash was the one who brought out Jasmine’s true self. Prakash, who was still a student at the time, loved his wife, Jasmine, and dreamed of opening their own repair shop. He later applied and was accepted to a school in Tampa, Florida. Although Jasmine did not want Prakash to go to America but accepted the fact that it would provide them with a better life as well as make Prakash happy. As the story progresses, Du, the adopted child of the Ripplemeyer’s, leaves home for Los Angeles. He has found out that his only living sibling, his sister, is alive and married in Los Angeles. Du leaved home in order to help his sister and make a life of his own. ives her a small knife in order to protect herself with. After landing, Half-face takes Jasmine in his car and drives her to a motel. Once there, he demoralizes her and eventually rapes her. Jasmine while in the bathroom of the motel room, slices her tongue in order to spill blood on Half-face. Jasmine then went up to him while he was sleeping and made a small cut in Half-face’s neck with the knife Kingsland gave her. At that, Jasmine showered and left the motel. When Taylor finally arrives with Duff, Jasmine is torn between her decision. Jasmine says, “I am not choosing between men. I am caught between the promise of America and old-world dutifulness” (240). Jasmine decides to go with Taylor. Jasmine also recalls living with Professorji. Because Jasmine was his favorite student and was a helpless widow she could have stayed with his family for as long as she wanted. However, she could not stand it for more than 5 months since she could not stand the daily routine of the family. They would always rent a movie and never went out anywhere. However, Professorji attempted to Americanize himself and his family. Jasmine noted that he called himself David and also talked on the telephone in a different manner. The final chapters of Jasmine talks about when Jasmine left the home of professorji in order to pursue her own life. Jasmine finds herself in the company of Kate Gordon-Feldstein.
