All Qwite on the Western Front

All Quite on the Western Front By Erich Mariaremarque is a war novel. It is the (supposable) statement on Paul Baumar who (along with his class mates) joined the German army during World War I. His friends consisted of men by the names of Kat (whom he was most close with, they did not have much in common, as for there views outside the war. But in the war they doth seemed to rely on the same instinct), Albert (who was somewhat the runt of the group), Muller (who was the strongest and in that held everyone together), Tjaden –my favorite for being so charismatic- (who was the comedian in the group and would do just about any thing to make someone laugh and didn’t care much for authority. Ironically jokes were more often played on him then made by him due to his large ego), and Haie (who was a little guy that was more interested in school work then learning how to serve in the war). During training the men all exhibit equal hatred of their commander. Tjaden refused to follow the commands and not only made back handed remarks to their commander, but mooned him. (He served time in the bonks for that one). . The other men showed their disrespect toward him by rape. When the men all go into the war, the author not only describes the

blood, guts, and heart of the war, but how the characters were psychologically affected by every action, which in turn made up their actions. The intensity of the war mounts the closer Paul, and his friends get to the front. Because of this the men soon become accustomed to one another. They were so close that they could spot one another from miles away simply by the way they walked. War had become a way of life for Paul, Kat, Albert, Muller, Tjaden, and Haie. They discussed home and what one another planed to do if peacetime were to come. Most, when thing of the past and being at home, viewed all as a dream it was sweet, but scary and dangerous for they had lost their innocence and therefore would not know how to be there old selves. Further more, thinking of these things only brought forth longing of them and daydreaming, which is always dangerous during a war. There commander (not form camp, but in battle (died early on, which was particularly hart wrenching to Paul. My favorite passage in the book was when Paul and his friends (who were all in the same platoon) had won a battle with the French –which isn’t why it is my favorite part- and the men started aimlessly walking toward more battles leading to the front, when they ran into a billboard featuring a young women, around there age, and a man (both well dressed and attractive). This was the first woman they had seen in years. After being in astonishment of the women the men grew jealous of the clean-cut man beside here. So they ripped him off the billboard. The men then began to scavenge for clean clothing such as socks among the dead French men. After finding all they could they retreated in a near by lake to bath and play around. As they were washing up in the lake they spotted French woman strolling along the opposing side of the lake. They caught there attention by grabbing some of there bread they had lying by there clothes and waving it frantically in the air while hollering for them to come over. The girls came over to them. However neither of them could met up with one another for they were not allowed to cross the bridge which led to each side of the lake and guards watched other them. So the men snuck out at night. Of course not after getting Tjaden drunk so he would be to messed up to hobble along,
