Special sense of the word sympathy in Scarlet letterNathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is story about Hester Prynne, a woman who commits a sin of adultery. This story evolved in a Puritan settlement. Apart from Hester the other characters around which the story revolves are Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale and Pearl. Chillingworth is Hester’s husband who is a scholar and much older than Hester. Dimmesdale is a young and eloquent minister whom Hester is involved in committing adultery. Pearl is the illegitimate child of Hester and Dimmesdale. Hester does not reveal her lover's identity, and the scarlet letter, along with her public shaming, is her punishment for her sin and her secrecy.
