War
After the events of September 11, 2001, President Bush declared a “war on terror.” He told the American people that we must strike against terrorism, and therefore capture/kill Osama Bin Laden. However, over a year later, Bin Laden is still alive and presumably slowly rebuilding his network. At this point, we do not even know where Bin Laden is hiding. Since the “war on terror” began, it has made it much more difficult for the United States to even keep track of where all the cells are now hiding. The terrorists are now spread out all over, which could potentially be more dangerous than the situation that existed prior to bombing Afghanistan. This only shows that war is not always the answers to our problems. The United States is on the brink of declaring war on Iraq. Doing so will only create more problems than we have now and will be pointless. We need different, more diplomatic ways of dealing with Iraq. Bush justifies military action against Iraq by claiming that they have weapons of mass destruction and biological and chemical warfare, which the United States funded or provided to Iraq (Hidden Wars of Desert Storm). However, Iraq is not a great threat to the United States at this time, as
Even if it is true that Iraq does have weapons of mass destruction, this gives us, the United States, no right to go in and destroy their country. There are many countries that possess nuclear weapons, and quite possibly chemical weapons. This includes the United States. The rest of the world looks at the situation and sees the United States as the bigger threat. However, the government of the United States does not seem to care. By using inspections to destroy all of Iraq’s weapons we are being hypocrites. This would also weaken Iraq to the point that they would be very vulnerable. After the inspectors leave, any country with nuclear capabilities could simply go into Iraq and take them over. It would be easy for a rebel group to overthrow the government. In a way, Iraq possessing nuclear weapons can actually create stability. With the threat of these weapons, nobody would want to give Iraq a reason to use them. However, with that threat gone, there is no way to know what will happen. If Iraq is not allowed to have weapons of mass destruction, which they have not yet threatened to use, then the United States should not either. The fact that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction is not a reason to declare war. If this was true, then the United States would be declaring war against almost the entire world. The United States is just being the bully in this situation. We feel that we can control the world and that nobody can stop us. “Is it not true that the reason we did not bomb the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War was because we knew they could retaliate?” (Republican Questions War). This shows that the United States was, at one time, in a similar situation to Iraq. We did not bomb the Soviet Union because we knew that they had the capability to fight back. Iraq is now in the position we were in. They do not want to attack the United States because they know that we can easily defeat them, possibly w
