Othello's Fit

Lie with her? Lie on her? We say lie on her when they belie her. Lie with her! Zounds, that’s fulsome! Handkerchief-confessions-handkerchief! To confess and be hanged for his labour. First to be hanged and then to confess. I tremble at it. Nature would not invest herself in such shadowing passion without some instruction. It is not words that shakes me thus. Pish! Noses, ears, and lips. Is’t possible? – confess? Handkerchief? O devil!

Othello’s fit is a major eye-opener or window into the characteristics of Othello. The few words that are uttered by this fuming and irritated man can be seen as minute by some, but Shakespeare has essentially composed this piece strategically in order to provide the audience with an insight of who Othello is, or to reinforce ideas we may have already established throughout the course of the play.

In this short passage Othello thinks and questions himself and his conscience. We can infer that there are several major issues running through the moor’s head and exactly why he may be feeling these strong negative sensations. In the leading up to and during ‘Othello’s fit’ we begin to witness Othello as he is influenced by Iago and due to t

‘The Great Othello’ that had once sat on a high stool and was deeply feared was no more. Desdemona’s ‘unfaithfulness’ had created and ignited a fire within Othello, a fire that told him this occurrence would threaten Othello’s high standing. Iago had plotted this very shrewdly and recklessly he knew that the only way around a man like Othello would be through him, and that’s exactly how he played it; he mixed around with the moor’s emotions and planted a seed that evolved into a deadly weed. It was the thought in Othello that Desdemona would prefer a man other than him, and do it so openly with no fear of the outcome that terrified him the most. The fire inside beckoned him to put an end to this evolving threat. Othello doesn’t even think it over but rather jumps into action plotting revenge. This abruptness is shown in…

Othello is a high ranked personality in society and sees himself above all. He has great respect for his reputation and makes sure that it is well taken care of. Othello is an insecure individual; this is as a result of his difference with the rest of his world, the white-world. Othello being black, has given him a sense of instability where he is living a ‘dream’ and this dream could come to taters at any point in time, whence he will ‘be put back in his place’ with the lower class. Hence his cautious and vigilant essence is really what made him and what continues to make him what he is.
