Greed

Today I’m going to talk to you for 5-7 minutes. If I talked for 10 minutes would you consider that greed? How much is enough? Greed is a selfish desire for more than one needs or deserves. It has made honest men murderers and countries with rich and valuable resources into the poorest countries in the world. It’s a trait that cuts across most human endeavours and goes as far back as the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve took the forbidden fruit in order to gain something to which they believed they were entitled. Little seems to have changed over the millennia. Greed has been the driving force behind every single war ever fought. Greed is why millions of children were put to work for 14 hours a day in factories during the Industrial Revolution, working in horrible circumstances for next to nothing. Unfortunately, human beings are born with this trait in them, but as we grow up and become intelligent human beings, we have to find ways to subdue this part of our character.

It has been over half a century since the death of Adolph Hitler, yet even now he has the power to fascinate and horrify us. How can one man continue to create so much interest and so much fear? It was his greed of power and his hatred of Jews that brought

“You work for your dreams you don’t steal it.” So says a Minnesota family man early in the movie, “A Simple Plan,” but he is only repeating an untested theory. Confronted with millions of dollars, he finds his values bending, and eventually he’s trapped in a horror story of greed, guilt and murder.

about the deaths of over six million people in Nazi Concentration Camps and the Second World War. For a few years Adolph Hitler brought prosperity and stability to Germany. He was a man of culture, enjoyed his paintings and was the visionary behind Germany’s great motorways. At the end of the war, when all hope had deserted him, this same man ordered that the very country he had tried to make so great should be destroyed. Can we ever understand such a man?

Greed hurts everyone, but it especially hurts the greedy person. Somehow, these people need to learn that they’re fine just as they are, and that their lives aren’t being made richer by possessing the things which they crave, but poorer because of the way that they act in trying to get the things they crave, and trying to hold on to the things they have. My hope is that they can be happy without the need and without the things.
