“You work for your dreams you don’t steal it.” So says a Minnesota family man early in the movie, “A Simple Plan,” but he is only repeating an untested theory. Confronted with millions of dollars, he finds his values bending, and eventually he’s trapped in a horror story of greed, guilt and murder.

He was a man of culture, enjoyed his paintings and was the visionary behind Germany’s great motorways. At the end of the war, when all hope had deserted him, this same man ordered that the very country he had tried to make so great should be destroyed. Can we ever understand such a man?

Greed hurts everyone, but it especially hurts the greedy person. Somehow, these people need to learn that they’re fine just as they are, and that their lives aren’t being made richer by possessing the things which they crave, but poorer because of the way that they act in trying to get the things they crave, and trying to hold on to the things they have. My hope is that they can be happy without the need and without the things.
