In the novel, the world revolves around labels, such as: ?.. he was proper son of Sir Ector,? and when Kay says, ??What does it matter what Hob says? He is only a servant,?? (14,17). Then, later White states, ?Kay had taught him that being different was wrong,? demonstrating the rules that are followed and that are considered as proper. Often, if these rules were not followed thoroughly, even though the person had no say in what they are, it was held against them, ?Kay seemed to regard it as making him inferior in some way,? even if they had no say in what they are and had no way of changing it (14). White thought this to be unfair; just because Kay was lucky enough to be born into an important blue blood family does not mean he is better than everyone else. In comparison, living in a conformist world, White faced great difficulty because of his homosexual tendencies. One would think that since the government disapproves and sends him off to seek psychological assistance, he should be able to get strike back. White?s way of doing this was by writing about how blindly different kinds of government run their countries or how blindly people follow their government. The third instance is when Merlyn turns the Wart into an ant. The ant scene represents a communist party because they did not even have any words to represent feeling or anything that represents a sort of freedom. ?There were no words for happiness, for freedom, for liking, nor were there any words for their opposites?there were only two words for qualifications, Done and Not-Done- which applied to all questions of value.. Their life was not questionable, it was dictated,? the ant scene proved to be un-American in everyway to White, despite his obvious dislike toward government he disapproved even more to this communist like society (124). ?But we need not go on about the ants in too much detail- they are not a pleasant subject,? White avoids the subject because it is so unreasonable to him, you follow rules and do things that don?t exactly give you any sort of satisfaction because you aren?t doing it for yourself you are doing it for someone else (127). Also, the ants were ?belligerent? and this seems to be the recurring theme in every scene. White speaks of the jousting and knighthood with a disgusted attitude because of how it mocks real war and makes fighting look stupid and harmless when it is not war is real, and very dangerous.
