Read the extract and look closely at the language used. What impression of Gossamer Beynon do you receive here?
From reading the extract, Gossamer Beynon seems like a very positive character. Dylan Thomas uses many descriptions to do with life and love, in second voices passage. For example ‘high-heels’, high heels are very sexy shoes and Gossamer is supposed to be a sexy character, in my opinion I think she is very aware of the image she is creating. Also it says ‘sun hums down through the cotton flowers of her dress and into the bell of her heart’ the sun is a very positive image as it is the source of all life and it is flowing straight into her heart. This gives me the impression that her heart is full of passionate and positive thoughts. The flowers are also a reference to nature. ‘Bell in her heart’ the bell gives of a ring, and it is a type of music and music is a positive image, in small proportions. ‘Steaming Gossamer’ gives me an image of her
being a hot and very sexual character, ‘strip her to her nipples’ the occupants of the Sailors Arms are undressing her with their eyes as she passes which makes me think that she is the focus of most of the male populations (in under milk wood) sexual thoughts. ‘Only woman on the Dai-Adamed earth’ this gives me the impression that she is the only person they can concentrate on, whilst she is in their trail of thought. This quote also has a biblical reference ‘Adamed’. Adam was the first male on the earth and the earth is also another reference to nature. ‘Places on her thighs still dewdamp from the first mangrowing cock-crow garden his reverent goat-bearded hands.’ This quote is full of strong sexual imagery, bringing this passage up to a climax of positive thought. ‘I don’t care if he is common’ Gossamer says this line as if she is a higher being than him, like she is more important in the world. Even though she says that she ‘doesn’t care’ next it says that she ‘whispers it’ so
