biodivertsity of canetoads
The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, micro organisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognise this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognised the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance. But why is Biodiversity important? Does it really matter if there aren't so many species? Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play and that it is this combination that enables the ecosystem to possess the ability to prevent and recover from a variety of disasters. It is estimated that there are 13.6 million species of plants, animals, and microorganisms on earth. Australia has about one million of these, which represents more than 7% of the world's total and is more than
Fish who eat tadpoles die. Animals who eat young toads and adults die. The museums have plenty of snakes preserved in jars, which were killed by toad toxin so fast, the toad is still in their mouths unswallowed. Even small amounts of water which tadpoles have gotten into, such as a pet's water dish, can be poisoned by tadpoles. When the pet comes along to drink from it's dish, it becomes sick. Local vets report that a couple dogs a month are brought in ill just from mouthing toads. The call of the male Cane Toad is a high-pitched "brrrr" which sounds like a telephone dial tone. twice the number of species in Europe and North America combined. Megadiversity describes countries with very high levels of biodiversity. Twelve of the megadiverse countries, including Australia, contain about 75% of Earth's total biodiversity. As a 'developed' nation, Australia has a special responsibility for biodiversity conservation and management. Other megadiverse countries include Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, China, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. ‘Their 'tadpoles' develop faster than many Australian frogs so they can outcompete our frogs for food.’
