Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Sali

J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye” novel is one of the all time great literature pieces of the twentieth century; not that it is superbly written, but in the fact that it explored many themes at once. Those three themes are loneliness, his age as well as growing up.

In The Catcher in the Rye the effects of loneliness have a very strong presence. Throughout the entire book Holden is very lonely. For the majority of The Catcher in the Rye Holden is aimlessly wandering around New York City all

alone, thinking of who he can call for a date or a drink with. At one point he even asks his cab driver to have a cocktail with him. He says, “Would you care to stop on the way and join me for a cocktail?” (60) After the cabdriver rejects him Holden only feels more lonely. In the beginning of the book, Holden is so lonely he even enjoys the company of his roommate and neighbour, whom he actually doesn’t even like at all

The themes in The Catcher in the Rye are very important and meaningful. A theme is a truth about life or human nature explored by the author. Loneliness, death and growing up to quickly are definitely good examples of theme in the book The Catcher in the Rye.

reason why he gets along with his “kid sister”, Phoebe. Holden tells Phoebe that he wants to be a catcher in the rye, which means he wants to save the children before they grow up. Although not possible Holden wants to make sure that kids don’t grow up. He wants to protect them from the dangerous, adult world. But no matter what happens children will still grow up to quickly. For example,

. At the end Holden even comments, “Even old Stradlater and Ackley, for instance, I think I even miss that goddam Maurice.” (214) Holden must be pretty lonely to miss people that he despises.
