Einstein was born in 1879 to a middle-class German family of Jewish ancestry. As a boy, he constantly wondered what made things work. Once when he was sick, his father gave him a compass. Albert was puzzled by the fact that the needle of the compass would always point to the north. This started him on the path of questing for scientific knowledge. He wanted to know about the way things worked in the world. It was this desire that began him on the road to discovering relativity. At the age of fifteen, Albert quit high school. From 1905 to 1925, Albert Einstein transformed humankind’s understanding of nature on every scale, from the smallest of atoms, to that of the cosmos as a whole. No other scientist has come close to Einstein’s accomplishments. Although he gave much of himself to political and social causes, science always came first. Now, nearly a century after he began to make his mark, his reputation as the greatest scientist of all time still stands unchallenged.

In 1939, Einstein collaborated with several other physicists in writing a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, pointing out the possibility of making an atomic bomb and the likelihood that the German government was embarking on such a course. The letter which bore only Einstein’s signature, helped lend urgency to efforts in the United States to build the atomic bomb. Roosevelt’s secret project to manufacture the bomb was known as the Manhatten Project. Einsein knew nothing about it at the time. In 1945, when Einstein saw the results of what he had done, he started a worldwide campaign to outlaw nuclear weapons.
