One of the major changes in society, which Gil Junger has shown in his film 10 Things I hate About You is how women in today’s society has changed for the better since its Elizabethan counterpart Taming Of The Shrew was written. One way that women have changed is that they now have so many more rights and are more independent; they receive equal opportunities to men in the work force and in the education system. They have the right to make their own choices instead of having their choices made for them and then forced on them by their fathers or husbands.

Kat’s response to racism is one typical of today’s society in youth; they either don’t care or are too busy to worry about what they consider a minor problem. Gil Junger puts forth the issue directly into the audiences face and wants them start considering being an activist against racial discrimination.

Apart from the changes in the various roles of teenagers and women, other issues such as Racism and parenting were highlighted in 10 Things that were either marginalised, or non-existent in Taming Of The Shrew.

This is clearly contrasting Shakespeare’s Taming of The Shrew where there were mostly male characters and they all had complete control over the females, even the rebellious Kate’s expressiveness was limited and was completely tame by the end of the film.

Women today are also far more assertive, if they want something, they’ll get it. In 10 Things the female characters make most of the first moves on the male characters. Both Kat and Bianca tried to kiss there dates before the male characters tried to kiss them. In Elizabethan society it was always the males who went to woo the female and then ask her father for her hand in marriage as both Petruchio and Lucentio did in Taming of The Shrew. This is no longer the trend and both sexes are free to woo as they please.

Relationships were the main part of the film 10 Things and the fact that women could choose there own dates was emphasized by Junger when Bianca was offered to go to the prom with either the rich jock Joey, or the shy kind Cameron. In Elizabethan society, the Father would have made Bianca go with the richest one- Joey, but in today’s society the women choose who they want and most women would have chosen the kind Cameron. The role of women has changed dramatically over time from the Elizabethan era; Gil Junger has fore grounded these changes heavily throughout the full 90 minutes of the film.
