In all sorts of literary works, the author gives certain significance to everything. Even the littlest detail may have importance and signifies something else. In chapter 3 of The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dimmesdale, Hester, and Chillingworth are placed in different elevations. Dimmesdale stands high above the crowd on a balcony and Chillingworth stands in the crowd. Hester stands between these two men on the scaffold where she can be viewed by the crowds. Dimesdale represnts heaven, Chillingworth represents hell, and Hester is on Earth like us. It is her decision to choose w
