anti-tobacco

I have chosen to write my final paper for this class on the effectiveness of anti-tobacco campaigns, organizations and legislation. Throughout this class we have covered and explored all of these, which has made me realize just how much really has been accomplished as a result of these efforts. For clarity, my paper will be divided into three different parts.

In the last several years, many campaigns have been implemented to educate the public about tobacco and its harmful effects. Many of these campaigns have been very successful either by trying to prevent youth from smoking, preventing adults from allowing their kids to smoke or creating awareness about prevention programs that are available. Probably the most known campaign is the “Truth” campaign which is infamous for their “tell it like it is” approach. They are well known for their powerful television commercials, which some say are sometimes criticzed

for being too harsh or dramatic. However, “Truth” is dedicated to exposing the truth about tobacco so that people can have all the information necessary to make up their minds for themselves. (www.thetruth.com) According to the latest Florida Anti-Tobacco Media Evaluation (FAME) survey, the “Truth” campaign is reaching Florida's teens at unprecedented rates -- 94 percent of the teens surveyed, ages 12-to-17, confirmed awareness of the campaign overall. (Florida Department of Health, Division of Health Awareness and Tobacco or class website).

Since its tobacco prevention program was started in 1998, Florida has reduced youth smoking rates by 47 percent among middle school students and 30 percent among high school students, according to a Florida Department of Health report released in October 2001. This decline represents nearly 75,000 fewer Florida youth smokers and more than 24,000 fewer premature deaths due to smoking, according to the state health department.
