George Steinbrenner made his first fortune as owner and chief operating officer of the Cleveland based American Shipbuilding Company. In 1970 he offered to buy the Cleveland Indians for $9 million dollars but his offer was refused. In 1973 Steinbrenner along with a group of investors he tried again this time for the Yankees. He bought it from CBS for $10 million dollars, way below market value. Steinbrenner has owned the team now for 30 years. The YES network (Yankees Entertainment & Sports) is the cable channel home to the New York Yankees, 60% of which is owned by George Steinbrenner. YES started in 2002 and is a 24/7 sports entertainment television network featuring the 26-time World Champion New York Yankees major league baseball team.
