They are ranked the number one team coming at a current value of $849 million dollars. Yes, they definitely can afford to spend.

George Steinbrenner made his first fortune as owner and chief operating officer of the Cleveland based American Shipbuilding Company. In 1970 he offered to buy the Cleveland Indians for $9 million dollars but his offer was refused. In 1973 Steinbrenner along with a group of investors he tried again this time for the Yankees. He bought it from CBS for $10 million dollars, way below market value. Steinbrenner has owned the team now for 30 years.

The YES network (Yankees Entertainment & Sports) is the cable channel home to the New York Yankees, 60% of which is owned by George Steinbrenner.
