Sex education
New Zealand has developed several better heath and well-being curriculum for young people. Sexuality education is taken to the public, because the government realizes it is important for young people to learn. However, sexuality education is difficult to turn to reality, because some groups of people are afraid of talking about it. In an effort to history the developments in sex education in from its conception, this essay will discuss two popular approaches that most institutions operate in teaching sex education among children: the comprehensive and abstinence approaches. A discussion of their differences and effects on children and the success on the study of sex education will be the primary concern of this paper, in order to generate a general outlook of the situation of sex education in the present New Zealand society. Furthermore, this essay will explain what the relationship between sexuality education and moral panic is; also does moral panic take place when sex education is taught or not in school? Significance of Teaching Sex Education In society there are many factors that contribute young people to be good citizens or bad citizens. If young people were taught about sexuality at school they would not be involved in gangs or at least they would not have sex with many boys, which could bring disease, and pregnancy. This is a startling statistic considering the fact that crime and poverty is directly related to children who are raised by teenage parents. People who are faced with the harsh reality of raising children are usually not prepared to handle the responsibility. A lot of men try to run away from the problem. They then reject their children and neglect to provide any kind of financial assistance for them. The mother is ultimately left alone to juggle the task of raising the children and earning all or most of the family income needed to support them as supported by Milner, Hottois., (1975). The number of pregnancy rises can be seen as moral panic as well. Furthermore, when we talk about school should teach young people about sexuality, and the most important part of teaching is teachers. The importance of teachers in promoting the importance of sex education in schools, teachers occupy multiple roles in teaching sex education: teachers can assume the roles of a "protector and friend," and teachers can easily conduct sex education sessions because they are able to make teaching a fun experience, which builds trust not only among the children and students, but also with the students teachers as well as suggested by Irvine, (2002). However, teachers can be also harmful to students, because information is very sensitive and not flexible. This means, different teachers have different thought of sexuality and information that they give to students might be correct and can be diverse, but can these knowledge be acceptable or not. According to (Irvine, 2002, p.140) “Information on safer sex could be life-saving but in some contexts, information might mislead, the consequences of speech and the uses of knowledge are always unpredictable”. Young people did believe having sex is fashionable, therefore at the weekend young people claimed they had nothing to do except to go out to milk bars and have sex with the gangsters as stated by Yska, (1993). Most of Young people had no idea about sex and they were having unsafe sex. This means, they could have babies, unwilling diseases and so on. In addition, at that time, sexuality information was mainly from magazines, and comic books, as I do believe pornography encourages sexual assaults. It shows women in a demanding manner and leads men to believe it is acceptable to abuse and harass female. As supported to (Yska, 1993, p.103) “distributing books and comics would only lead to immorality if a child already had an unhealthy degree of sexual emotionalism”. As we can see, young people were stick together at milk bars, and they became gangs which created moral panics toward society.
