New England became a safe refuge for separatists fleeing religious persecution in England. They were seeking a place to freely practice their beliefs. They wanted to establish a “pure” community as John Winthrop, the future governor of Massachusetts mentioned. (Doc A) Because of their string beliefs and reasons for fleeing England, the people of New England had a faith-based society. The settlers, the Puritans and Pilgrims, were both very religious peoples. They even based their government on their religious values. It was controlled by the church, and the laws were based on the Bible. The Articles of Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts stated that the general laws were based on religion. (Doc D) Everything was done in God’s name, and even wages were justified by the Bible in the Wage and Price Regulations in Connecticut (Doc E). Community was strongly enforced in the New England region. Almost all of the immigrants were families consisting of men, women, their children, and their servants. The people of New England followed religion and church-based things and were easily controlled, unlike those who fought for their own desires and sought material things and social status in the Chesapeake region. The people in New England were seeking religious freedom and focused on the important things in life, and the people of the Chesapeake areas were seeking gold and money, and other unimportant items., and they also differed on the issue of slavery. The people of the two regions shared a common country of origin, and spoke the same language, but that was about it. They developed into completely different cultures, which would eventually lead to disputes between the two areas.
