At first glance, kulam would appear to be one of the most unreliable treatments to illnesses. First of all, it is almost purely based on superstitions, on beliefs that illnesses are actually caused by spells and evil spirits. Living at a period of time when scientific dogma governs just about everything, such superstitious thinking is almost unacceptable. It has been a long time already since mankind separated itself from a mythological world picture and started to think more rationally. Man no longer sought explanations from supernatural forces, and instead opted to use the tools of logic in explaining things. In kulam, however, man is brought back to ancient thinking where science is ignored and superstitious thinking is the norm. Secondly, such treatments call on the patient’s utmost faith for it to work. This is in direct contrast with Western medicine, wherein patients ar


e guaranteed cures whether they adhere to certain beliefs or not. In kulam, it is important that the patient believes in good spirits and the like, or else, as the belief goes, the spirits would not look upon him with favor and he would not be healed. This obviously violates scientific thinking by presenting ideas that have no rational basis whatsoever. Thirdly, such treatments do not guarantee cures, as Western medicine does. Mainstream Western medicine depends on science to give dependable cures. Kulam, on the other hand, leaves it to the supernatural forces of nature to determine whether a patient is to be cured or not.
